Bebe Cool Uganda’s leading Raggae Musician

Bebe Cool whose real name is Moses Ssali is the most prominent Reggae artist in Uganda. He sings mainly Raggae though he has on some occasions done songs in Afro Beat, Hip Hop and Dancehall.

Bebe Cool or Munenemunene (Big is Big) as he likes to be called is a great music artist no doubt, but he is a great enigma too.

You remember when he started stepping on tables and before long it seemed like he wanted to step on every one. Then, it all seemed like the whole world was not amused by the way singer Bebe Cool a.k.a Moses Ssali was behaving as a celebrity. Yet his songs kept finding their way unto the top of the charts despite his not-so-amusing stunts as a celebrated musician.

Fate soon caught up with the musician as if to punish him for his extreme braggadocio. In a space of less than two years, the musician had a string of misfortunes that included a temporary divorce of the wife Zuena, an incident in which he was shot in the leg, a terrible accident on Kampala Gulu Highway and a narrow escape from death during the Al-shabaab Bomb attacks. Before long, in a twist of fortunes, it seemed like the whole world was then sympathizing with the Agenze singer. But also the Munene munene singer took advantage of the situation and “stole the show” when he released hit after hit during one of his most difficult moments in life.

Some of the songs he released during that time include AgenzeBamugambe and Kasepiki. No wonder that it was after that moment that the singer managed to win the accolade of Artist of the Year at the PAM awards for the first time in 2010 despite the fact that he had been in the top echelons of Uganda’s music industry for a decade or so. Nonetheless it should not go without mention that before that he had won nominations to the Kora Awards in 2003 and 2005.

The rise of one of Uganda’s Ragggae maestros Bebe Cool to music stardom began with a collabo Funtula he did with Bobi Wine and later Mambo Mingi with Halima Namakula. He has done a number of songs with the Kenyan Duo Necessary Noise under their group East African Bashment Crew.

The Kasepiki singer has released a number of hits over the years and has a number of awards to his name, which include an Artist of the Year accolade in the Pearl of Africa Music Awards that he won in 2010.
